Unreal Engine 5 environment scene based on the Rock of Dunamase, an ancient Irish castle that was destroyed and rebuilt by the Normans. I wanted to give the scene more atmosphere, taking inspiration from Elden Ring.
Assets were made with 5 high poly rock that I sculpted in Zbrush. I created a procedural tiling material in Substance Designer with 3 variations (bare, mossy, blackened) to add to the rocks.
These rocks were then baked into a tiling material using xNormal. I repeated this baking process 3 times, one for each material variation.
I set up the materials as paintable blend materials in Unreal, making it easy to add mossy or darker details.

I used the UE5 Nanite workflow for the rocks, but the larger repeating mesh pieces for walls etc. using a more traditional game poly count. They are subdivided sufficiently to enable material blending.
